The Scene Aesthetic (DW Records)

Review by: Jabari Oliver

The Seattle, Washington duo of Andrew de Torres (of the rock band Danger Radio) and Eric Bowley make The Scene Aesthetic. They came together as friends to write music, meshing their life’s mission, life’s perspectives, talents, and passion for music to make melodies of love. (Eric Bowley once served as a LDS missionary in Argentina.) They used Myspace to debut their first collection of songs and received a huge influx of fans that inspired them to continue their journeys as The Scene Aesthetic.

On their A Type & a Shadow EP, they bring an abundance of acoustic cadence. The crooning duo sing their way to her heart. The EP is a profusion of love songs that are catered to professing unconditional care, attraction, support, and love using unshakable faith. Their musical ingredients include having the vocals and the acoustic guitar in the forefront of the song with additional instruments in the far background whether they are piano keys, drums, hand claps or snaps. All their arrangements thread for an easy listen. Nevertheless, at times while listening to the songs it gets tiring and repetitive with the same message coming across through the songs. It makes the listeners lean back and actually comprehend the concept behind The Scene Aesthetic. Their music demonstrates an unconditional emotional value towards a loved one no matter how their counterpart reacts to their attention. On their beautiful “Humans” song, they approach an ex-lover (who is no longer in their life) with a positive attitude singing, “Deep, deep inside of yourself there is a soul starving for some affection; been waiting for years and the time passes by, all you ever wanted was to fit in. So I wrote you this song, I hope that you like it. Cause you light up my life, and I know you can fight this. You’re the most beautiful girl in the world and I wanted you to know…..If it were up to me, I would construct a key for your heart; and finally set you free.”

The Scene Aesthetic’s A Type & A Shadow is not for the fan that hears the music but listens to the music. It is for the listener that enables music to take them places they have never been. Their music takes you on a spiritual journey. It offers a different perspective of relationships and love. The Scene Aesthetic is medicine music for love. It is not for everyone; just for those who can comprehend and want to comprehend. The Scene Aesthic’s A Type & A Shadow is based solely on a particular perception of love and serves as an interesting form of entertainment.

THE SCENE AESTHETIC

THE COLOR FRED

Start Time: 9:15

Initially gaining fame as lead guitarist/singer for emo powerhouse Taking Back Sunday before striking out on his own as the Color Fred, Fred Mascherino was born on July 27, 1975, and grew up in Coatesville, PA, a part of metro Philadelphia. He went on to earn a degree in jazz performance from nearby Temple University, and in addition to his formal education, Mascherino found some of his earliest musical inspiration from punk groups like Dag Nasty, the Descendents, and Jawbreaker. Getting involved in the local Philly scene, he played guitar and sang for the punk band Brody from 1992-1999, a time during which he also became good friends with a guy from the group Clockwise named Ed Reyes.

Brody released one 7" and one full-length album in their time together, and following their demise, Mascherino founded the emo-leaning indie rock outfit Breaking Pangea alongside Will Noon and Clint Stelfox. The first Breaking Pangea show occurred in January 2000, and after three releases on two record labels (Undecided Records and Equal Vision), the trio went on its last tour in April 2003. That last round of shows included dates with Taking Back Sunday -- which featured Mascherino's old friend Reyes -- who weeks later extended an invitation to him to replace departed guitarist/singer John Nolan. (Weirdly enough, Nolan went on to form Straylight Run with one of Mascherino's former bandmates, Will Noon.) Mascherino quickly accepted and joined up with TBS on the summer's Warped Tour. Just as Nolan did before him, Mascherino provided complementary vocals to lead singer Adam Lazzara and became integral in the band's songwriting process.

THE READY SET

THE READY SET

Start Time: 8:15

The Ready Set, the brainchild of Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Jordan Witzigreuter is a one-man alternative pop band influenced by life, love and music.

At 19, Witzigreuter, a recent high school graduate, is a jack of all trades; drummer, singer and keyboardist ready to lay his claim in the music world. Using the moniker The Ready Set, young Witzigreuter writes and records all his own music.

Picking up his first drum sticks while in the fifth grade, by the time Witzigreuter was 14 he was a member of multiple bands, but it didn't take long before he realized that what he really desired was a sound all his own. Age 16 marked a new beginning for the young musician with the formation of his very own solo project - The Ready Set.

While all recordings are made by Witzigreuter, friends do join him on tour to help create a unique and memorable live show - complete with explosive lighting effects, infectious melodies and mind-blowing beats.

Citing everyone from Daft Punk and Kenna to Kanye West as influences, Witzigreuter stresses that there is no specific comparison that can be made for his music - and that is just the way he likes it. To be unique and genuine in today's scene is something rarely seen by contemporaries today, but it seems to be easily mastered by this young musician. Be sure to check out The Ready Set on tour now let the infectious melodies carry you away. The music - it's all for you. So turn it up and dance your heart out.
