Tigerdog is a Three-piece indie rock band from Charlotte, NC. Their debut album, That Was Then. This Is Meow., was recorded in legendary Mitch Easter’s Fideltorium Studio and released in July of 2017. The band is comprised of Daniel Hodges, Ryan Southwell, & Caleb Biele. Stand-out first track, “Seriously”, comes out swinging with a twinge of pop-punk sneer from guitarist/vocalist Hodges. Tigerdog’s primary sound is the bittersweet memory of wasting late nights in a gas station parking lot while you’re a teen and time suspends itself in angst, attitude, and trying to make sense of life’s uncharted terrain. Soft build ups cascade into swirling guitar-driven melodies, bringing mid-2000s influences like Brand New and Manchester Orchestra to the forefront. Romantic, wistful cries and shimmering chords linger on “We’re Never Having People over…Ever Again” and pulse against bloodthirsty drums as Hodges touches on dissociated, depressive tendencies with simplistic lyrical observations like “been wearing all my clothes, straight into the shower.” The softly-lit music video for “We’re Never Having People over” offers equally intimate, brave visuals for the melancholy melodies as an extended scene lingers on Hodges face while he cries straightforward into the frame for just a touch too uncomfortably long as the lyrics pan out, repeating a yearning “honestly…honestly.” Tigerdog sums itself up within their name. A dangerous force, capable of pummeling refrains and sharp, predatory curls, yet the sound stays grounded and accessible through shining self-aware domesticity. This is especially true in “Get By” where the sound roars out of the record back and forth before finding itself purring alongside you in an armchair, offering comfort and loyalty. Tigerdog exemplifies the duality of figuring out this life, like in “Cain #Able”, where the band negotiates between the two biblical pillars, offering either fear or love, but leaving the listener with the quiet realization that there is only love, once you stomach to choose it.

HUMAN RESOURCES

Start Time: 8:30

Human Resources is an alternative pop-rock band from Charleston, SC. Formed in 2015 by Dries Vandenberg, Aaron Utterback, Paul Chelmis, and Matt Zutell, HR quickly adopted a unique role in the blossoming Charleston music scene as a more pop-centric counterpart to the neo-southern and indie rock acts prevalent in the area at the time.

The band’s debut single “Queen” and the subsequent L.P. En Route (2015) were released to positive local reviews, earning noteworthy traction on Spotify and other streaming services. The debut played a key role in earning HR the “Electronic/Experimental Band of the Year” award from the Charleston City Paper.

The follow-up campaign Pizza Dreams (2016) matched the trajectory of it’s predecessor, eventually earning the band a second consecutive City Paper Award, and producing another successful single, “Bad News” which helped the band extend its reach to the national level.

In 2017 Human Resources began work on their third release. As with En Route and Pizza Dreams, the band will utilize the talents of drummer Matt Zutell (Coast Records) for the majority of the production needs, continuing a long standing tradition of self production. In addition to Zutell, HR will tap LA based producer Taylor Locke, founding member of Rooney, at his studio The Velveteen Laboratory for initial production work.
