Individually, the Allstars have shared the stage with top billing acts and have been featured on many major recordings. Most have their own projects, as well. There is no rehearsal for these pros. They simply exchange song ideas via CDs, MP3s or youtube links. Each player learns their respective part and then tosses it into the pot at the gig, sort of like musical hobo stew. It’s a tasty Queen City staple, which is sometimes taken for granted.

Many a manic Monday sent me hustling to the Double Door to vent frustrations or celebrate blessings. The Allstars' music has always been there to fill my needs. I‘ve left numerous troubles and had many good times on that dance floor, as many others have over the years. Charlotteans, as well as travelers from around the globe, would show up at the legendary blues joint every week, due to the reputation the band has built.

The first incarnation featured Charles Hairston (vocals), Les Moore (guitar/vocals), Joe Lindsay (guitar), John Alexander (sax/flute), Rick Blackwell (bass/vocals), and Jim Brock (drums). Eventually, Jim switched to percussion and Chris Allen stepped in to man the drum kit. The new configuration was a hit and the same outfit held it down until February 2009, at which time Charles lost a year-long battle with prostate cancer. A beautiful memorial was held on February 25, 2009 at Neighborhood Theater and the Allstars, along with many of Charles’ other musical friends performed in honor of him. It was a great way for all of us, friends and fans alike, to pay tribute to the beloved entertainer. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost eight years already.

The newest federation of funk is Ziad Rabie (sax), Joe Lindsay (guitar), Rodney Shelton (keys), Rick Blackwell (bass/vocals), Jim Brock (percussion), Chris Allen (drums/vocals) and lil’ ol’ me, Shana Blake (vocals).

I've enjoyed shows there from both sides of the stage and have always loved the look, the sound and the feel of the place. Erik Christensen mans the soundboard and knows how to make the large room sound its best. For the Allstars, the move was a no-brainer. The folks at the Visulite have been so welcoming and have really helped us to settle into our new home. We feel so grateful for the opportunity to continue the legacy of the Monday Night Allstars in such an awesome space. What's more, the patrons have been loving the dialed-in sound and cool ambiance, and they show it by shaking their tailfeathers on the dance floor.

I invite everyone to come check it out for yourselves. It's one of the most diverse, unique, lively, loving events that you're likely to attend and it's the best way to get on the good foot for the rest of your week. Don your dancin' shoes and bring that booty this Monday. See you on the dance floor!
