Hailing from Charlotte, NC, Hungry Girl is Jason Skipper (vocals, guitar), Jimmy Lail (drums) and Jake Wade (bass). A high-energy rock and roll band, Hungry Girl formed in 2011, before releasing two EPs (2012’s ‘Fess Up’ and 2013’s ‘Baba’) and gaining a large local following.
HG’s riff-heavy guitars, reminiscent of classic rock and metal, paired with pounding grooves and catchy pop-influenced vocal melodies, combine to craft a unique type of rock and roll that’s unlike any other modern band.
Rip Currents marks Hungry Girl’s second full-length album, following 2015’s ‘Hungry Girl’ LP and the 2017 EP ‘Cool Shots’ (Refresh Records). A brisk, 10-song blast with plenty of hooks, riffs, licks, and solos, Rip Currents is a well-balanced blend of rock and roll, pop, punk, and just enough metal to appeal to long-time fans and new listeners alike.
Charlotte post-pop indie rockers Petrov formed in 2018 when guitarists Syd Little and Michael Backlund began writing with bassist Matt McConomy and drummer Garrett Herzfeld. After the group had a handful of songs down, they began the search for a vocalist, and they found a great one in Mary Grace McKusick. ?
McKusick has been doing some writing of her own since joining the band permanently. Her deeply personal lyrics cover everything from relationships, sexuality, sexual assault and manipulation to identity and insecurity. It’s McKusick’s first time in a band, but she’s settling in. ? “Joining a band is a whole new experience for me,” McKusick said. “Writing music and interacting with other musicians creatively is a challenge, but I’m looking forward to what’s to come.” ?
After writing for a year, they recorded their debut EP. Altogether, the six songs comprising "Sleep Year" present the beginnings of a skillful young rock band artfully navigating their wide spectrum of influences.? The Charlotte-based label Self Aware Records released the six-track EP on cassette, CD and digital format on March 15th, 2019.
